Complications from Gestational Diabetes (Part: 6/7)

While many women with gestational diabetes have healthy pregnancies and babies, unmanaged blood sugar can lead to complications for both the mother and child, such as:

For the Baby: Risks include excessive growth leading to complicated delivery, low blood sugar levels after birth due to high insulin production, a heightened risk of developing obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life, and in severe cases, death before or shortly after birth.

For the Mother: Gestational diabetes increases the risk of preeclampsia, characterized by high blood pressure and significant protein in urine, and the likelihood of experiencing gestational diabetes in subsequent pregnancies.

Proper management and medical oversight can mitigate these risks, underscoring the importance of early detection and intervention in diabetes care.
